The Grill has been around Athens a long time. Good burgers, fresh fries, they also have other hot sandwiches, etc... On our most recent trip the restaurant was severely understaffed, but obviously a challenge that evening. We never heard the employees complain. With about 8-9 tables, the two employees that we could see did a good job, one trying to keep the kitchen moving and and the other focused on the customers on the front end. No complaint about the food or the service that night, despite the challenges. That being said, the owners really need to have this place cleaned from front to back. Dust the many artifacts that are on display, especially the items displayed outside of the cabinets. I don't intend to sound mean, I just hate to see this place being neglected. Would love to see these things improved, which would make my family of 6, and probably all customers, feel more comfortable on our next visit.
Absolutely the worst place I’ve been in Athens. Employees are rude and service always sucks even when there’s nobody else in the restaurant. Food is very sub par.
Stopped by at 0600. We were the only people there at time of order. Took 30 min to get a plate of bacon and eggs. Very slow. Food was good though.
Get a patty melt or a rueben, and feta sauce for your fries.
This is a great place. I’m in town for a conference and this was one of the only places open. Really good food and great service.
I visit the grill during the Super BOWL LIII weekend, specifically on Saturday February 2nd, I was expecting a better service, but unfortunately do to the fact that Athens Georgia is a college town, the city bars and clubs were full and lots of of people in the Streets were hungry, when we arrive to the grill we were quickly given a table, but our server took almost 5 minutes before she came and ask us for the drink and we decided to order since we were hungry from a hectic day. Long story short the food took almost 30 minutes to arrive, we were really considering on just walking out other people were doing it too, finally the food came and it was descent but they forgot to give me Cole slaw with my platter.
Usually a good meal, but this time they just seemed ... distracted. Got the tofu dogs, and they were a mess to eat ... buns were still connected, and the kraut was bunched under the dog, all in the middle and had soaked the bun to falling apart. Of course we'll go back, but will get something else, and hope that they're paying attention
A' LA MODE, PLEASE.What better way to stop off after a lovely dinner at The Place restaurant (around the corner from The Grill) then to hop over to Athens 24 hour hot spot, THE GRILL, across from the entrance to the University of Georgia. Here you can eat some killer burgers (yes, I've been here many times) salads, breakfast, just a well rounded diner of good food. However we elected to have their large serving of home made apple pie that's topped off with a large serving of creamy vanilla ice cream. As you can see here you can barely see the pie, but that vanilla is a wonderfully sweet crossover taste when combined with the slightly tart apple. Man... I'm ready for another bowl!"'Scuse me, miss!?"
We enjoyed a quick dinner at the Grill. It is always great food and the young gentleman who was our waiter was pleasant and attentive. He checked on us many times and kept our drinks filled. One sad item is that they have changed the fries, they now a straight cut fry and they were a wavy thick cut. They are still good but liked the old style better. But as always the feta dipping sauce is outstanding.
I recommend to everyone who visits Athens. So so memorable. Fries with Feta Dip and Malt Milkshakes are all you need in life. Praise God!
If you’re feeling sandwiches, burgers, and fries this is a great lunch spot. Their fries are very good! I didn’t even know they had feta fries until I left and will try those when I go back. It’s not too crowded at lunch and had enough space for our big party. The wait staff was great too.
It was a fun dive. Really cool atmosphere, really good, clean breakfast food. Not greasy, delicious. Our server, Hillary was great to chat with, very friendly!
The waiter literally walked away in the middle of taking our order to seat others. I understand people need to be seated but finish one task at a time. I have never had that happen in my whole life and it was very rude. He did not even apologize for doing so. Food was good.
Poor service, like always. Have been here for over an hour with no refills on the drinks. Food came out cold and the burger was beyond dry. Do not recommend until the owners decide to hire more help. This place is no longer an Athens staple. go to Clocked instead for the diner feel and better burgers and service.
The food is good but you'll be waiting 30mins to an hour for your food. It makes no sense how long it takes to get your order.
A downtown Athens staple for diner style breakfast and burgers. There are some great "signature" items like the breakfast Grill Muffin or Feta Cheese Fries. Always crowded late night but worth it!
This is one of my favorite places to eat downtown. The atmosphere is absolutely amazing. It’s comfy and so interesting with the vintage decor and cute knickknacks. Their burger selection is pretty great, but my favorite item on their menu is their mashed potatoes. It may sound like an odd menu item, but do not be fooled by its strangeness. Those taters are the best darn taters that have ever touched my tongue. You have to get them with their brown gravy to get the full experience. I’ve hardly had an issue with service. They’re typically always very friendly, and although they may take a bit to refill a drink, I believe it’s certainly a great little diner to check out when you’re in town:)
Good food and good service!
Atmosphere is a total five stars. It took us a while to get serviced even though it wasn’t busy and there were a lot of staff on hand, which was a little confusing and irritating. The food here is AMAZING though. The shakes are seriously the best, and the feta sauce with fries is perfection.
The best part of our dinning experience was the service. The waitress was very nice and attentive. The food tasted good at the time however my husband and I did get sick after eating there. Also the food seemed to be a little expensive for what it was. So we won’t be back.
Cool atmosphere and people.Good food and milkshakes!Get the Feta dressing for your fries and you'll be happy you did.
Retro experience, good food and great staff! Milkshake was fabulous!
The staff are so friendly. I can tell they work very, very hard, but they never let it affect their service. The food is incredible, and the atmosphere is pleasant. Try the bacon swiss burger!
The Grill is a classic downtown restaurant. It's been there at least 15+ years and still is there. The seating is comfortable and the staff is friendly. Well thought out menu. Two people can eat a full meal plus drinks and shakes for under $40. They also have a kids menu. Great variety of different types of burgers. Yummy pickle spears. Clean tables, nice family oriented theme. If you want delicious burgers, fries and shakes, this is your place to stop by in downtown Athens, GA.
I loved this place while I was at UGA in the 1980’s! The milkshakes were so thick that one could turn one's face inside out trying to suck them up through the paper straws. I'm so glad to know that another generation of DAWGS are able to enjoy the classic food and atmosphere!
Wanted a booth, three available and they insisted we wait because they want to sit us at a table instead. The host was rude and when I thought the manager was going to help he made the situation worse ...he actually tried to provoke me and called me trevor...whatever the hell that means. I had a great night in Athens with this ONE exception. I don't care if they have the best burgers and milkshakes...I'll never spend a dime there!
Love going here on late study nights, not fast food, the wait is pretty long. The food was decent and they are conveniently close.
Atmosphere is cool. I loved the old diner feel, and the cool vintage toys on display. The food is okay. My fries were cold when they arrived, and the entire table was underwhelmed by the food. Service was inattentive. The shakes we're super amazing! Parking was relatively easy. We parked in a public garage, and it was free. I am not sure I will visit again, especially with all of the other yummy food options in Athens.
Great waitress! Food was perfection! Can't have asked for more!
A down to earth Mom and Pop dinner. Service was decent, but the food was outstanding! Just remember its a college town local hangout.
Decently good diner food with good vegetarian and vegan options. Service is always a little slow, but it's a fun enough atmosphere. I always love their fries with feta dressing.
Located in historic downtown Athens, GA. Very cool retro decor. Attentive waitstaff... but 30+ minute wait for eggs and pancakes and they weren’t busy. Eggs not prepared as asked. Food good but not great. I had blueberry pancakes. Come for the ambiance... not the food.
Good restaurant for breakfast but only a decent lunch and dinner spot.
An Athens landmark. The Fries, Shakes, Burgers, Chicken Fingers, and Feta Dip are fabulous. The fries in the photo are good but I can't wait till the waffle fries blade is fixed. I've been eating at The Grill since the early 80's at the old location around the corner. The wait is worth it (be prepared on game days).
Its literally just good. Can’t go wrong with this place. Came here while visiting Athens, and wow the burger was really good. The portion was very nice alone with the meat being cooked well, not dry at all. Sides are good as well, and it overall makes a good meal. Service was also well, helping a large group of 10+ that we had.
Just as amazing as when I was a kid. Had the strawberry shake, the big molly and fries. Outstanding service, food, and atmosphere as well. Just what I was expecting and wanted. Even the Smashing Pumpkins brought back memories of my childhood. Definitely check it out of you want a proper burger and shake.
I have been going there for years. No matter what time of day or no matter what i order it is always a good experience. Love The Grill
Visiting Athens and decided the check this place out. The food was pretty good - seemed a step up from the usual diner fare. The service was nice and attentive. I liked the old school diner decor, but it did feel a bit dingy. I will probably visit again.
First of all, I have been there couple times, I really like their burgers except their fries are just full of potato skin and so dry tasteless. However, Waitres is extremely rude when I went there She makes me sit then I started to wait to give my order. She make two other groups of people sited after me. Then she started to take other tables orders who came after then me. The one table realized what happened One kind lady said It is disrespectful. I didn't want to spend any money or time in this disrespectful place. Kindly I used restroom then I left. She was not only disrespectful to me also society,Noone doesn't have to hear this kind of stories about the States.
Love it. Great traditional American burger, and my favorite Malt Shakes in all of Athens (so far). But as usual service is great and the atmosphere is even better.
Bugs yall, alot of bugs
I have tried burgers from many parts of the US and some places abroad. I have tried Elk burgers and Kangaroo burgers. By far, the burgers here are my most favorite. The burgers are delicious, the vibe of the place is cozy and nice, and above all, they have consistent quality any time of the day. I have been there for lunch, and I have been there at 4am. I should also add, I don't live in Athens, but this place is a must go for me anytime I end up in Athens.
A bit overpriced for what it is, but it used to be one of the only things open after the bars closed. The melts are the best, fries are meh
Good food, good atmosphere. However, they could do some work on the ceiling. I had the triple cheese burger, it was good.
Loved it! Eddie was our server and he was friendly and attentive. The venue was unique and the food was hot and fresh. The only negative was the bathroom needs updating. It was very clean however.
If you’re in Athens, this place is a must! Great food and great service. The Feta dressing is amazing and a great addition to your meal. Try a milkshake if you care for dessert, they’re also wonderful. The manager is very nice & welcoming. Stop here for a great meal and great time!
Old time diner. Good, big breakfast.
Fantastic! It was my first time eating here and I loved it. The food was good. The atmosphere was cool. The staff was friendly and welcoming. Definitely would like to come back.
Getting a table was quick, but I was disappointed to learn breakfast isn't served "past noon most days" AFTER I was seated and waiting to order. I was seated shortly after 12:20 on a Saturday. I adjusted and ordered a sandwich and fries which took an absurdly long time. The fries were bad (like getting the scraps of a batch of from too long ago), the sandwich was basic and more like something I could have made at home. The host was the best part of this whole dining experience- they were friendly and fast.
Excellent food and friendly service. Very reasonable prices
